The Government Arts College, Melur caters to the educational needs of  the students from the disadvantaged sections of the society and rural areas in and around Melur. It offers eight undergradute degree programmes and one post graduate degree programme.

Melur is the largest Taluk in Madurai district. Melur has 52 villages and a total population of  over 1,53,897. Out of the total population, 1,12,928 live in the rural areas. The total literacy in Melur is 63%, with 83% male literacy and 71% female literacy. The main occupation of the area is agriculture. Melur is also seen on the world's business map due to its excellent quality granite and ploughs, which are exported.

Melur has 20 schools of various levels and boards, 1 government arts college, 1 self financing college, 1 engineering college and 2 polytechnic colleges.
